Just outside the Kandy city, the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens offer a welcome respite from the bustle. Covering over 600,000 square meters, the park was originally created exclusively for Kandyan royalty, but was transformed into a botanical garden by the British. There are thousands of large, mature trees, many with unusual-looking exotic blooms and fruits, an orchid house and a spice garden to investigate. The garden has a wonderful collection of over 4,000 species of indigenous and foreign plants. From a well-maintained collection of orchids, royal palms & the extraordinary cannonball fruit tree made famous by its planters’ - King George V and Queen Mary of The United Kingdom back in 1901. Visitors can marvel at a botanical garden that is one of Asia’s best groomed. Tickets can be purchased at the main gate and your guide will be more than happy to assist you with the same.
